It offers a metaphor for the Charlotte institution that has been providing a home for LGBTs who seek a place to celebrate their lives outside the more well-travelled gay locales of Plaza-Midwood and South End. It also serves as a good barometer of the owner, Milton Howard’s, vision of a club that catered to the taste of the African American gay community; something that had never been done before in the Greater Charlotte area.

Charlotte Pride: In and Out of the Mainstream
Pride Charlotte 2011 will be remembered as a milestone for many valid reasons: It was the first time it was celebrated on Tryon Street, Charlotte’s home to most public festivals and I also believe that it was the first time that a mayor of the city, in this case the Honorable Anthony Foxx, addressed the attendees as a featured speaker. Certainly the LGBT community should celebrate its greater acceptance by the larger culture of Charlotte.

What the DNC Means to LGBT Charlotte
It was called a far-shot and an unlikely choice: a Southern city, in one of the most non-unionized states, located in what is colloquially known as the Bible Belt, a traditional Republican stronghold. Yet Charlotte, along with Minneapolis, St. Louis and Cleveland, was selected as a finalist for the chance to host the Democrat National Convention in 2012… and it won!
