Gender, sexuality, race questions await UNCC ‘Cloud 9′ audiences
The University of North Carolina-Charlotte’s Theatre Department will present the play “Cloud 9,” by Caryl Churchill Oct. 19-29. The comedy takes a deep look into long-held sexual and gender stereotypes and roles and leaves the audience questioning their veracity and relevance to life. The play also plays with notions of gender and gender identity. Two of the actors play characters opposite their own genders. For this special feature shared exclusively with Visit Gay Charlotte, local LGBT newspaper QNotes had the opportunity to chat with Theatre professor and lecturer Kelly Ryan, who directs the student production, about the play and its themes.

We’ve also kept the community foremost in our thoughts. Indeed, the community is the very reason we embarked on this project. New portal, Visit Gay Charlotte, launches for LGBT visitors, newcomers and residents
A new online portal that promises to guide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) travelers, newcomers and residents to friendly and inclusive lodging, dining, shopping and nightlife has launched. The two local gay men who founded the site, Visit Gay Charlotte (visitgaycharlotte.com), hope their vision will serve a growing LGBT tourism market in the Queen City, which is fast becoming a destination for business travelers, national conventions and other events.
What the DNC Means to LGBT Charlotte
It was called a far-shot and an unlikely choice: a Southern city, in one of the most non-unionized states, located in what is colloquially known as the Bible Belt, a traditional Republican stronghold. Yet Charlotte, along with Minneapolis, St. Louis and Cleveland, was selected as a finalist for the chance to host the Democrat National Convention in 2012… and it won!
